It's a lot of work to write a hub. What if I tell you there is a way you can make money on HubPages and not have to write a single hub? Let other people, like me, write the hubs, and you can make your money off of their hard work. All you have to do is share the link with your friends, family, and associates.

How to Use Referral Links to Make Money
To use referral links to make money online, you simply sign in to HubPages, find hubs that you like, and share them with your friends. If you are not already a member, you can join today for free. As your friends read the hubs and look at the ads, you make money. You make 10% of the ad impressions, not just on the page that you shared, but also on any other HubPages the friends visit for the next two hours. And the bonus is that if someone joins under your referral code, and makes money, you get 10% of their earnings as well.
Don't worry; you aren't stealing any revenue from the hubber who wrote the hubs. HubPages actually gives up a portion of its cut because the management team knows that new readers are likely to stay around, maybe come back to read more hubs, and even start new HubPages accounts for themselves.

Do you have a referral tracker?
In order to make money using a referral tracker, you need to make sure you have one. You don't have to memorize it, just make sure one exists. A referral tracker helps HubPages figure out where the visitor came from.
Please refer to the picture below for help on this step. Once you have signed in to HubPages, go to My Account, which is one of the links on the right in the black bar. Once you get to that page, there is a set of links underneath the black bar on the left side. Click on Earnings. Then finally in the black box of the left, click on the link for Referral Trackers. Or you can just click on this Referral Tracker link which will take you there directly. There you will see the code for your referral tracker. .
You are automatically assigned a Referral Tracker, but you can create new ones if you want to keep track of which referrals are more lucrative, or want ones that are easier to remember.
Now that you have made sure you have a referral tracker, you are ready to make some money by sharing links on Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon, Digg, Reddit, and pretty much any other social networking site.
Refer Hubs and Make Money
All you have to do is whenever you read a hub you particularly like, simply share the link with your friends and family. You can make sure that your link has a referral code in it by following the instructions listed below. HubPages will automatically create a link to the hub with your referral tracker in it.
How to use a referral tracker to make money
At the bottom of the page of each hub, there is a share button. Click on that.
Share Button
Some additional options will open up right above the share button. Then on the left, there is a link button. Click on that. Most of the other buttons don't have a referral tracker embedded in them, so make sure you click the link to this page button.
Link to this Page
Another window will open. HubPages has automatically created a link to the hub for you, and added your referral tracker so it knows the source of the referral. The link is already selected and highlighted in blue.
Another way to get the link with the referral tracker embedded in it is to go to the very bottom of the page. In the gray bar, there is a "link to this page link.
Once you have found the link with the referral tracker, simply copy the link to your clipboard by making sure it is highlighted, then hold down the control key while you press the letter c. Click on the finished button to get rid of the window. Your link will remain on your clipboard.
Then go to Facebook, your email, or wherever you want and choose where you want to place the link. Then hold down the control key while you press the letter v. This will paste the information where you want it. A link to the page with your referral tracker already attached will be posted. That's it. Now when your friends click on the link, you get the credit!
Since this code is already on your clipboard, you can paste it on several networking sites without having to get it again, as long as you don't copy anything else on your clipboard.

To get some practice, use this post, or find another post I have written that you think your friends might find interesting. Share the link using the steps I described in this hub, and see your earnings increase on hubs I took the time to write. Choose your favorites or share them all. do bear in mind that your clicks only count for 2 hours... when using the trackers. from the click,you get paid for impressions for 2 hours only. still, a good deal from HP as you also earn from author signups from your referral links. i used to think triond and bukisa surpassed hubpages, but not anymore. i used to work on infobarrels content but its a real nightmare and i cant be bothered with them any further. i was pretty sure that IB were not paying me fairly, thats another post though.

OK, I must be doing something wrong, help! I clicked share, then the link to this page, my referral tracker came up, and I copied and pasted the link, clicked it from my hubby's facebook, then checked it and it still says 0.. help please!

You're welcome mmm-mama. Once you copy it, you have to paste it. If you are going on your hubby's facebook page, assuming he is logged in, you would have to go to where you can post a status, and paste it there by V while you are pressing control. Then wait a little while, because it takes a little while to pull up the picture. Then I delete the link, and type why I like the article or what it is about. Then submit.

Wonderful explanation, but it poses a question for me. If we share these hubs by clicking on the the links at the top for Facebook, Twitter and Google+, are the referrals linked in the same manner?

I read about this when I first signed up. I have been battling my own well earned prejudice against the internet. It is the infrastructure of the anti-christ, Big Brother's hotrod. I am of the opinion that tweets should be called squeeks . . . that's what lemmings do.
However, jobs are scarce in this town and my customer base collapsed along with the housing market. I'll give it a try, but I won't take the mark.

ChaplinSpeaks - I am sorry I wrote incorrectly. Yes, you would get a referral earnings if you use a referral tracker on your own hubs as well. In fact, you get credit not just for the page you shared, but for additional hubs they view as a result of coming to your page. And if they sign up and start writing their own hubs, you get a percentage of earnings on that as well.

I don't use the HubPages share. Instead I add my new posts to content I curate on another site and then, from that site I send the post to Twitter. Doing it this way is like hitting 3 birds with one stone.

Sharing referral links really is pretty easy once you figure it out, and only takes seconds, but it does take some time to figure it out. Just click share, then link, then copy and paste.

Sharing hubs that have already been written is more likely to get referral income especially if you market it right and choose topics that interest your friends.

But it does provide a nice side income, and people may be willing to return the favor and share your work as well. It helps all of us.

PDXKaroakeGuy, you shouldn't get the ban from using referral trackers, as long as you don't click on any of the ads. Getting banned would certainly make you lose your income in a big way.
I use this strategy a lot, both within my hubs in order to link to other hubs, and also as stand along links on my blogs, twitter, facebook, etc. It's a shame that Hubpages doesn't automatically put your tracker code in when you use one of the share buttons like Twitter or Facebook. But it's worth the extra effort to use the "link to this page" and use the tracker link.

Thanks Jennifer. Referral links are a great way to add a couple extra pennies to help you meet the monthly payout minimums. It is great to be able to share other hubs and get some money, and especially wonderful if you can convince a new writer to join and earn his own revenue.
I set up a number of trackers when I first started on HP, but I know I haven't used them to their full potential. In fact, since joining fb about 6 months ago, I've always taken the "lazy way out" via a simple fb share or a simple copy and paste from a Hub's URL as it appears in the browser's window. No more! Thanks for putting this money-making tip together in an easy-to-follow hub. Up and useful. :)

How to determine referral income is quite in the dark. Where will I go to view them. Are they expressed in clicks?
Does anybody earn solid income this way? I run a small PPC campaign to sign up some referrals. I got about 120 signups but most of them are inactive. Those who write some hub become inactive in a few days. Maybe I am only targeting to wrong people.
Thank you nick071438 for your comment. To paste the link to Twitter and Facebook, go to that site, log in, and click on the space where you would normally write your message. Press the letter v while holding down the control key. On Facebook, you can wait for the system to pick up the icon - looks prettier that way. Then you can edit the message as you want, you can even delete the link itself once the icon is up there.

Thanks for your comment moneytoplist. There are two ways to get referral credit: One is to get people to sign up using your link. In this case, you would get referral credit on all of their hubs. The other way is to share hubs written by other Hubbers. This article discusses earning referral credit based on hubs of interest you find, not getting people to sign up and write hubs.

nick071438, Go to your accounts page, and click on earnings, then referral trackers. This will show you how much traffic you have accrued on your traffic referral tracker and how many people have signed up, and how many hubs they have written. Hope that helps!

alexandry, I have gotten many views from sharing links using a referral code. The "link to this page" link that is at the bottom of each HubPage includes a referral link, making it quick and easy to copy and paste. I use it whenever I share a link via email, Facebook, StumbleUpon, etc. Thanks for visiting and commenting.

Making money without writing articles is a silly idea, for this site... You speak about sharing articles and using referral codes via social networks and by way of friends and family, but there is nothing "residual" about that, when concerning income; get real!

You're right, this type of referral traffic is not going to generate a lot of residual earnings, unless someone decides to join under your tracker code and write their own hubs, or if you added it to your blog or hub where someone can click on it at any time. Sharing hubs is a way to supplement the main income of writing your own hubs. 60% is definitely better than 10%, and even more so since it is residual, but it only takes a minute of your time to get the 10%.
